Sneak Preview: New Table Tools and Layout

Daniel Barnett [2012-02-13]UPDATE:We're now taking registrations for the beta

A really cool part of this mammoth update we're prepping is the new data grid (table) tool.

Currently WORKetc dictates how you see your data.  Do a contact search and WORKetc forces you to view the results in a certain way with only the information it wants you to see.  Look at your lead lists and there's no flexibility to view the info that is most important to you.

This is about to change - power to the people, set the data free!

The screen shot above is a preview of the new data table we're rolling out:
  1. Drag and drop to reposition the order of columns
  2. Select and drag to change the width of columns
  3. Select from the drop menu what data you want on your table.

But the real guts of this update is shown @ 3.  By clicking on the settings icon (the cog shape) you'll be able to pick and choose what information you want to see on the table.  At the moment we only have basic contact fields with future development making available all sorts of options.

The real power of this new approach is found in combination with the contact list / data mining module

For example, set up a new data mine to search with these parameters:

  1. All customers in the U.S.A
  2. That have the custom tag "priority customer"
  3. Who have not made a purchase in the last 6 months

Once WORKetc has retrieved your data set, you'll be able to customize what information is available to view.  For example:

  1. Company name
  2. Contact Person
  3. Mobile Phone
  4. Email Address
  5. Employee Contact
  6. Your custom fields

The new table functionality, combined with updated custom fields and data mining is going to propel WORKetc's CRM to a whole new level.  It really is powerful stuff and I feel like we're only just scratching the surface of how people are going to end up using this tool.

We don't have an exact release date for this yet, other than aiming for the end of the year.

The updated permissions, custom fields, contact lists, table functionality and hundreds of UX updates all need to pushed to beta at the same time.  Lots of work but making steady progress...

Will this feature be available for other content types such as subscriptions?

There is currently only a very basic way to list subscriptions (again, only as an example - this would go for all content types in a similar way to ZohoCRM) in the reports section - no way to add fields, no way to filter fields, no way to save a filtered list.

Will this new release provide that level of granularity across all the content types?

Dan @ WORKetc - Monday 5, December 2011 3:34 AM

@Duncan - yes. Across tasks, projects, support cases, products, invoicing. And as someone asked previously, filtering by price range and date ranges.

>>no way to add fields
So - add a custom field to a table view

>>no way to filter fields
This is covered in contact lists/data mining module work

>> no way to save a filtered list.
Yes - one a search and view has been created, save that view

OK - awesome - looking forward to it

Beautiful, now thats what I am talking about. The core of it all, and what is so important above all these bells and whistles!
Great work

Is this going to apply to 'tasks' 'projects' etc? I hope so...Work, etc. is a bit more then I need right now but with such great pricing I would consider it if the task/project interface (draggin g and moving tasks around, etc) was avaiable. Best of luck with the roll out.

Thank you guys for such a wonderful year. Worketc has helped me 100 times in my business and every day

Will we be able to view by tag/ no tag - or better to add custom fields?

Dan @ WORKetc - Wednesday 4, January 2012 9:41 AM

Caroline - hadn't thought of Tag view. I'm going to say it won't work though because some customers have literally 100's of tags. Will wait and see how it works in the real world before making a call on it.

Will this mean I can 'select all' in a view (e.g. unassigned support cases) and perform a bulk action e.g. assign to a person?

Currently you have to click every record one by one and then make the required change.

@Dan - regarding filtering through 100s of labels, I propose displaying labels not in the usual drop-down, but 2D - in a popup window with columns of alphabetically sorted labels. As the user clicks on labels, contact filtering starts to happen, and the labels are shown in a "selected" state. A "Done" button will close the window and show the final selection of filtered contacts.

TimeToNote does something close to this, but done only with a list. Even so, it's the best UX for drilling down among tags that I've seen in close to 40 CRM/PM systems I've evaluated. Here is a screencast - http://screencast.com/t/HUX2mdDdX

@Dan Barnett: out of curiosity as a former webdev, what component are you using for the grid (or have you rolled your own?)
